The Mishcon Family Center for the Safe Transportation of Children with Special Needs, Alyn Hospital
In memory of Taube Korn z"l
The Mishcon Family Center for the Safe Transportation of Children with Special Needs was established twelve years ago in ALYN in order to distribute information about safe seating for children with special needs to families and professionals involved in accompanying or driving them
The Mishcon Family Center was established by Taube Korn z"l, one of ALYN's veteran occupational therapists who worked tirelessly to promote safe transportation for children with special needs. Taube brought her knowledge and professionalism from abroad and she taught many occupational therapists around the country. In addition she instructed countless parents and care givers of special needs children in the important elements of safe seating thereby enabling thousands of special needs children nationwide to benefit from her expertise and knowledge. Taube received nation-wide recognition and a number of awards for her work.
On Jerusalem Day 2010, following a serious illness, Taube sadly passed away. Even during her illness she continued working to promote the Center. To honor Taube's memory and in recognition of her devotion to the Center - its work and its goals - we have named the Center after her.

Remembering Taube

"Hi. I don't believe we ever met but I am a friend of Taube's a"h from Michlalah days. We lived in the same dira: she roomed with Rivkie (Stern) Lamm and Laurie (Weinsweig) Wakshlag and I shared a room upstairs with two native Israelis. At any rate, Taube and I were very friendly that year and were able to stay connected for a few years after that. Unfortunately both the distance (I live in Baltimore) and the preoccupation with raising our families got in the way and we lost touch over the years.
Flash forward to a year and a half ago. My husband and I had signed up to do the 5 day Wheels of Love bike ride for Alyn Hospital. As a result, we started getting newsletters from the hospital. One of them mentioned Taube a"h and her contributions. My heart sank when I saw the two letters z"l appended to her name in that newsletter. Before that day, I knew nothing of her illness and tragic passing. Reading that day about Taube and all she did for the hospital made me all the more committed to support the organization to which she contributed so much. My husband Ron and I completed the ride in the Negev last year. Two months ago we did our second Alyn Ride, this time in the Galil. It was after completing this second ride that I felt that I had digested the experience enough to be a able to write about it. So I wrote an article for the Where, What, When, our local magazine which is distributed to the Orthodox communities of Baltimore and Silver Spring, MD. Since I included something in this article about Taube, Diane Horowitz suggested that you might be interested in seeing it. So if you are, here is the link to the article:

As a post-script, I emailed the article to Rachel, a nurse we had met on the ride and about whom I wrote a paragraph in the article. After she read it, here is what she wrote to me, "I was especially touched by what you wrote about Taube Korn Z"L. I got the chance to meet Taube during her last hospital stay in Shaarei Tzedeck before she passed away and had the zechut to be her nurse at that time. Although we only knew each other for a few weeks we became very close and she really made a strong impression on me. I think that your efforts and dedication to the ALYN bike ride is a beautiful way to commemorate her life and everything she stood for."
Diane told me that your daughter Sari is engaged so I want to wish you mazel tov on this simcha! May your life be filled with nachas from all your children and much simcha always.
